The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remains one of the most popular entries in the series. Fans of the 2006 game have demanded a remake or remaster for many years.
After years of disappointment, a glimmer of hope appeared as rumors began circulating that an Oblivion Remake could be a reality after it was revealed during Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda that it had been in development but seemingly scrapped.
But, more recently it has come to light that Bethesda may not have canceled the remake and instead have been quietly working on it away from the public eye, and its release could come sooner rather than later.

Recently, a change to the Oblivion Steam page caught the attention of fans, as various pieces of media, including trailers, were removed. A sudden jolt of activity came out of nowhere, quickly getting fans speculating that this could be taking place ahead of an official announcement.
Oblivion fans quickly took to Reddit to discuss the changes and what this could mean for the rumored Oblivion Remake, but not all players are hopeful that this is the news we’ve been waiting for.
Some fans theorized that this could be hinting at a remaster rather than a full remake, as has been rumored. This is due to other games, such as Duke Nukem 3D, receiving a similar treatment before the release of Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, with u/KeneticKups stating that “the only confirmed thing was that “Oblivion remaster” was on their plans.”
When questioned about how this would be possible on a different engine and that it would be a remake, u/DottierTexas3 pointed out that “Halo did it,” referring to the anniversary editions of Halo 1 and 2, which saw the classic FPS games remastered in a new engine while retaining identical gameplay as the originals, just with modern updates.

This would be possible for Bethesda to achieve, which would give Oblivion more of a fresh coat of paint similar to the Crash Bandicoot N’ Sane Trilogy as opposed to being a remake in the same vein as 2019’s Resident Evil 2 Remake.

With Oblivion‘s gameplay and mechanics being widely praised by the community, with many preferring it over Skyrim, this wouldn’t be a bad thing and would likely satisfy most players, who are just itching to replay the game again.
Hopes were further squashed that a remake is around the corner when eagle-eyed gamers noticed that multiple Bethesda and ZeniMax-owned games received the same updates, including Hi-Fi Rush, Doom Eternal, and The Elder Scrolls Online.
Although this may not be the smoking gun that confirms the existence of the Oblivion Remake, it also doesn’t mean that it isn’t set to be released. With the rumor mill going into overdrive in recent months, there is usually no smoke without fire, and all signs point to it being in development.

However, as always, take this with a pinch of salt until Bethesda officially announces the game. On that note, Todd Howard…what are you doing? Just give us what we want. Worst comes to worst, we have Skyblivion to look forward to.
